The One and Only

This is probably the one and only New Years' resolution I will ever keep. I decided since we didn't know how Andy would feel we couldn't really have a party this year and Brent and Amy decided to do their own thing with their kids at home. So my resolution for the new year is to get all of my pictures downloaded and get caught up on my blog!! I'm happy to announce that I have been successful and it's not even midnight yet. So I'm going to be an old fuddy duddy and get my husband his drugs so he can get some rest since he is still recovering from brain surgery and go to bed!! If only I can get Scott and Matthew to go to bed. Maybe I'll just go lock all the doors and tell them to come and wake me up at midnight. I think maybe brain surgery and being eight months pregnant have taken its toll on me!
Happy New Year!

The Polar Express

Some classes at school during the Christmas season make gingerbread houses and others make the polar express. This year Timmy's class did the polar express. They took a king size candy bar and decorated it with Christmas candy. You can't really see in the picture how cute his train turned out but Timmy did a really good job decorating. Matthew's class did gingerbread houses but his was almost completely gone by the time he got home from school. I guess he got too hungry!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! I think this smile on Sams face says it all!
Sam got a new basketball hoop from Santa and Lego (duplos) from Mom and Dad.
Sam had been carrying around the pretty packages from under the tree a few days before Christmas and was really upset when they kids started tearing off the paper. As he was having his fit he accidentally opened a package of balls. He stopped and stared at it for a minute then he was perfectly fine with all of the paper being torn off the packages. As you can see from the picture below it became really serious business for him.
Even though Sam loved all of his gifts we could have just put his name on all of Bethanys presents. Timmy picked Bethanys name this year for the sibling present and got her a keyboard. Sam loved it!
Bethany was kind enough to share and they took turns singing into the microphone.
Bethany got a baby that came with a stroller, high chair, and crib from mom and dad,
and a Tinker Bell chair from Santa.
Bethany has been walking around the house singing,"Feliz Navidad, Feliz Navidad, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas, I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart!" I thought maybe when Christmas got over she would stop. But she hasn't. When I put her to bed at night she still says,"good night mom, I love you and Merry Christmas!"
Timmy got the Shake 'n' Go Extreme race track from Santa,
and a Star Wars blaster with a duel light saber from mom and dad.
I was worried that Timmy would be disappointed because he had asked for another castle but when Timmy ran into the room he said,"Wow this is just what I wanted!" Grandma took care of the castle problem anyway. She got him a ship with knights and Timmy thought that was just as good as a castle. I think he doesn't care as long as he is able to have his battles with the good guys and the bad guys.Matthew got an all terrain remote control car from Santa which is perfect for up here since it rains all the time. The kids can't ever play with the cars they get because they'll get wet. This car can go in the rain and in the snow.
From mom and dad Matthew got General Grevious' Lego ship. He was very excited because the week before I took him to the store to spend his birthday money and he wanted to buy it. It took everything I had to talk him out of it since it was already sitting in my closet at home!
Scott piled all of his stuff up so we would only have to take one photo! He hates pictures! He got a new pellet gun with a scope from Santa and Band Hero from mom and dad. Matthew picked his name for the sibling gift and got him the rockets. Matthew explained to Scott that there were two rockets so they would be able to do it together! Matthew is so thoughtful! Scott just said okay but I get the one that goes higher. It's probably a good thing that the booster pack come with multiple shots! I'm just glad Scott is such a good older brother.
Merry Christmas!

Christmas Eve 2010

I love Christmas Eve at our house! We usually have the kids dress up and tell the nativity story but we didn't think the kids wanted to do that this year so we decided to use an overhead projector and show pictures while Grandma told us the story of the birth of baby Jesus. After it was over I think the older kids were disappointed that we didn't dress up which is kind of funny because they were the ones that complained last year. I can't decide if it's because Amy just had T.J. so we had a real baby to play baby Jesus or if they really liked doing it. Whatever the reason I think next year we will dress up.
After we talked about the true meaning of Christmas and sang songs the kids opened their first gift, which is always p.j.'s. They were all really cute except I over estimated how much Scott had grown and his were a little big so I will have to try to shrink them in the wash or I will just wrap them up again to give to him next year!
Now it's off to bed!!

Happy 11th Birthday Scott!

Matthew's baptism happened to fall on Scott's birthday. So after the baptism that morning we came home and had a delicious lunch with friends and family. Then we had a little birthday celebration for Scott.
Even though he wasn't thrilled about sharing the day I think it turned out to be okay. We got him the Lego Star Wars Turbo Tank that he has been asking for.
But I think the real surprise was Grandma and Grandpa Lays gift. It made his day. He told his Grandma that he wanted Halo Reach for his birthday and he thought for sure it wouldn't happen because Grandma told him she had to ask me if it was okay. Then Grandpa wrapped it with a bunch of boxes so the present looked really big. At first I said no to the game but after doing some research I found that you could turn off the language and violence. So he was pretty shocked when he actually got what he asked for.
The next weekend Andy took the boys and a couple of their friends to play laser tag to finish off the celebration!
Scott works hard at school and is really good at whatever he puts his mind to. I love how creative he can be especially when he is building with his Legos. We love you Scott and are so glad you are a part of our family!

It's Great to Be Eight!

Matthew has waited for this day for a long time! He was so excited to be baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
I know that he was ready. He read the whole Book of Mormon before so he could decide whether or not this is what he wanted to do. He prayed about it and decided that he knew the church was true and wanted to take this first step back to his Heavenly Father.
When Andy had his surgery we weren't sure if he would be able to baptize and confirm Matthew. Matthew really wanted his dad to baptize him. So we postponed the baptism for a week and decided together that if his dad wasn't able to do it then grandpa would. Heavenly Father answers prayers and it was a miracle that Andy was able to perform this special ordinance for Matthew. There was some confusion (mainly voiced by children) as to why there was another guy in the font. The Bishop had approved someone else being in there to help Andy. Matthew wanted his old primary teacher Brother Pedigo and he was kind enough to aide Andy by holding his IV out of the water. (No, that cute fanny pack is not a fashion statement!)
Matthew set up a great program. He had me speak on Baptism and then he had his Grandma Lay speak on the Holy Ghost. It was fun to be able to share some of my thoughts with him on his special day and let him know how proud I was of him.
Matthew had alot of support at his baptism. There were a lot of friends and family that came to enjoy this special day with him.
Some of those people were his Grandma Jeppsen from Utah,
and Grandpa and Grandma Lay.
We are so proud of you Matthew!
Congratulations!!

Miracles Do Happen!

Andy had his brain surgery on November 16th to remove the bleeding vessels in his brain stem. We were told by the doctor that it was the most dangerous part of the brain to operate on and if she went in and the vessels didn't manifest themselves then she would just have to close him back up because it would be too dangerous to dig. When we got there that morning the neurosurgeon told me to expect 4-6 hours in surgery. Dr. Shulman asked us one more time if we were sure we wanted to do this. She had already explained the complications and had put in orders for him to stay at a rehab facility after the surgery because she just knew that if she pulled anything out that he would have some function loss and would have to relearn things or it would just take time for some of those things to come back. She was just hoping it wouldn't be anything too big like breathing or walking. We had prayed and gone to the temple many times about what we should do and the answer was loud and clear to go ahead with the surgery. So we did.
Dr. Shulman came out 3 1/2 hours after they went in and I immediately thought,"oh no that wasn't long enough that means they couldn't find the vessels" then I took a closer look at her face and she was smiling very excitedly. She told me that when she opened him up the vessels were right there and what she pulled out was rather large. Hopefully that means that the vessels that were bleeding this time and all the old bleeds were connected and she could get them all but we won't know that for a couple more months. At this point he wasn't awake yet and she said as soon as he woke up she would test his functions and come back out to talk to me. She did warn me that his brain function did go down a little during surgery but was back to normal at the end which she said,"made her hopeful that he would be able to make a full recovery from any damage that was done going into the brain stem".

About an hour later Dr. Shulman came back out and was on cloud nine. She said he was awake and all functions seemed to still be intact. The only thing he was having problems with was a little numbness on the right side of his tongue. She couldn't believe it and actually called it a miracle. And I said,"Well that is what we have been praying for!"

Andy was so drugged that the nurse got in his face and shouted at him to open his eyes and look at me. So he did and gave my hand a little squeeze. I was so relieved. Since he had to stay in ICU and I knew he would be watched over every second I went home and slept better than I had in several months. Dr. Shulman told me they would call me if there were any problems or if there was any swelling. Now that he was awake and all functions, except part of the tongue, were normal she said the only complication now would be swelling.

The next day before I could even make it in to see Andy he called me on the phone!! I was shocked. He said that Dr. Shulman had already been in and still could not believe how well he was doing. She tested his functions again and they were all normal even the numbness on the tongue was gone!! She couldn't believe it. She said she thought it would take at least a couple of weeks or maybe a month for the numbness to go away and it was gone over night!! The Dr. was even bringing in colleagues to see her "miracle" patient. When she would bring them in she would test all his functions so they could see how amazing it was.

So almost two weeks went by and Andy was doing great. The surgery was on a Tuesday and he came home that Sunday, completely skipping any rehab. When he got home is when it got hard for me. He had a whole pharmacy of medication that I needed to remember to give him and he was needing around the clock ice pack changes. Not only that but some of the medications upset his stomach so he would need something to eat in the middle of the night when he took his pills. So here I am running up and down the stairs all day and night being 7 months pregnant.

I was exhausted. Then came my birthday. Monday, November 29th, it was one day short of being two weeks out from surgery. That night my wonderful friends brought me dinner and my fabulous mother made me eclairs. Amy and her kids came over and with my kids sang happy birthday. It was a fun night and I was able to relax after my kids got in bed around 8:00. Andy went immediately upstairs because his head hurt. I thought maybe he just overdid it. Then he called downstairs and said,"I need a blessing right now". I was surprised so I called my brother and went and got my dad up. When I got upstairs Andy was in more pain then I had ever seen him in before.

Brent came right over and gave Andy a blessing with my dad. The blessing told us that we needed to do what the doctor told us. So after I sent my mom and dad to the store to get some Tylenol for Andy to take in between the narcotics he was taking, Andy said,"Call the doctor". So I called the nurse hot line and she said that it was really weird that he was almost two weeks out from surgery and then all of a sudden is now in extreme pain. I agreed and she said she would call the neurosurgeon who was on call. In the mean time Andy had gotten out of bed and told me to take him to the emergency room because the pain was getting worse.

I didn't know where to take him and remembered the blessing telling us we needed to do what the doctor said. So I asked Andy where he wanted to go. He said just take me to SouthWest which is only about 20 minutes away. For some reason this made me feel uneasy and I told Andy that we should wait for the nurse to call back. He said he wanted to go right away. So I slowly got ready and just as we were ready to walk out the door the nurse called back.

She said the neurosurgeon said to come by ambulance to Sunnyside Hospital and DO NOT go to SouthWest. He said that there could be bleeding from the surgery and we needed to come there because all of the neurosurgeons knew him and what they were dealing with. (The on-call neurosurgeon was actually the person that did the gamma knife surgery for the other bleeding vessels five years ago). The nurse also said she was going to call the emergency line and get an ambulance for us. She put me on hold and came back on just seconds later. She told me that the emergency line wasn't picking up and that I needed to hang up and call 911 immediately.

Needless to say it was a VERY long night. When we got to the hospital they had a whole bunch of tests ordered for him. He was in so much pain that they started giving him morphine right away and lots of it. After all of the tests they were able to put him in a progressive care room (this is in between ICU and regular floor) about 5 o'clock in the morning. At this point I left because I knew he was going to be watched 24 hours and there was really nothing I could do.

The next morning Dr. Shulman came in immediately and started shouting orders to the nurse. I tried to call to see how he was a couple hours later and the nurse was too busy being bossed around by the Dr. to talk to me. Which was probably a good thing. The Dr. was able to get his pain under control and put him on a high dose of steroids.

When the kids got up to go to school my mom told them that the ambulance had come last night and had taken their dad back to the hospital. They all said,"The ambulance came to the house and you didn't wake us up?" They were very upset not because dad was in the hospital but because they didn't get to see the ambulance. Then they were even more upset when they found out the fire department came too because they are the first responders in the area. They made me swear that if it ever happened again I would wake them up. I told them I would but that I never, EVER, wanted to have to call 911 again!

Dr. Shulman said that Andy had a-septic meningitis(swelling around the surgery sight) and that the spinal tap showed a staph infection. He saw an infectious disease doctor that same day and he put him on an antibiotic drip. He dramatically improved and after being admitted into the hospital Monday night was able to come home Thursday evening. But this time he would be coming home with steroids and a picc line for the antibiotics.

The doctor thinks Andy must have been down playing his pain the first time he came home (which would have pointed to swelling) and I agree because this time when he came home he hasn't had to have any ice packs and hardly ever takes the narcotics. He also felt good enough to baptize our second oldest son, Matthew.
This is a picture after the stitches were removed during his second stay at the hospital.
We went to see the infectious disease doctor and he said that he thought the infection was staph orifice meningitis. I don't think we will ever really know for sure but Andy was able to get his picc line removed yesterday and is antibiotic free. Andy will also take his last round of steroids in a couple of days. Even though he still has his bad days, this past week Andy said he has hit a new level of wellness. Before when Andy would do something it would wipe him out for the entire day. Now when he does something he rests and then he can usually get up and do something else. I know this frustrates him because he wants to be able to get up and go non stop but even with the little set back I'm feeling extremely blessed with everything that has happened.

We are so thankful to our wonderful family, and friends for the prayers and fasting in our family's behalf this last month, I know that is what helped get us through this trial. The Lord has been with us and guided us through this whole process. We have truly seen miracles happen all around us this last month and have been blessed beyond measure!!

Thanksgiving Feast

The first Thanksgiving feast was at Bethany's preschool. She looks so cute in her pilgrim bonnet. They also made cute hand print turkey place mats.
When it came to eating Bethany was not very adventurous. She is by far my pickiest eater. At least she was able to find a few things to eat!
Thanksgiving Day we stuck to tradition and went out to lunch at Gustav's with Grandpa, Grandma, and Brent and Amy's family. Andy was not able to go with us but we were able to bring all the goodness home to him. He was thankful for the feast we brought home and that he was able to get some much needed rest in a quiet house.
After lunch my parents took all the kids to the movie Tangled while I put Sam down for a nap. Then we all went over to the church for some Lay family dodge ball. We came home after that and had our favorite thanksgiving appetizers and more pie! Yum!!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Because You Never Know

We decided to keep the kids home from school today so they could have one last day to run around with their dad because you never know. Even though we feel like everything will be okay we don't really know what to expect after Andy's brain surgery tomorrow. Since they will be operating near the brain stem we are not sure how long it will be before he will be able to be with the kids. So we took the kids down to Wilsonville to the Family Fun Center. The boys went and played Laser Tag together and then we all just hung out in the arcade and let the kids run around with their dad.
Sam loved SkeeBall. He would throw the balls as far as he could and then Andy would catch it and roll it up the ramp. Sam thought it was great!
What a great Dad! He is trying to win a dinosaur for Timmy while keeping Sam from running away.
Scott was really good at the hunting game. I was impressed at his aim. It must be all that target practice out in the backyard.
Timmy and Matthew found the game with biggest guns. They could barely hold them so of course they thought it was awesome.
Bethany liked the games but was really thrilled when they started spewing out tickets. She was so excited it was like the machine was giving her gold.
After we played we took the kids out to dinner. We came home and Andy had a blessing. During the blessing Matthew started to cry really hard. When it was over I asked if he was okay. Matthew said,"I'm just going to miss him." Andy will be in the ICU for about two days if everything goes well. So the kids won't be able to see him until he is transferred to the recovery floor. I'm hoping for their sake he isn't in the ICU longer. I know they will miss him and this will be very hard for all of us but I also know that the Lord has blessed and guided us in so many ways leading up to this surgery and now it is in His hands. Which I can't think of a better place for it to be.

I Just Had to Have One!

For Andy's brain surgery he shaved his head. I told him I wanted to go and get professional pictures taken before but we never got around to it. But I just had to have a family picture before life gets too crazy. And who knows after tomorrow what life will bring, so this is our family snapshot for today.

Happy 8th Birthday Matthew!!

This year we had to celebrate Matthew's birthday a little early. He turns 8 on November 18th and He has been waiting for his 8th birthday for a long time. When it finally got close the best day for Andy's surgery ended up being the 16th of November. So when we told him we needed to celebrate on the 13th, Matthew with his happy disposition said,"Does that mean I get to open my presents at the hospital?". Matthew has such a good attitude about everything and we love having him in our family. We just had a family party this year and went bowling with Grandpa and Grandma and our cousins. For Matthew's cake he told me exactly what he wanted. He said he wanted two Jedi Knights fighting in a river of lava. He's has never seen the third Star Wars so I was kind of surprised that is what he asked for. He was very creative with the licorice and helped Andy decorate the whole thing.
He got brand new scriptures,
a ds game and a yo-yo
and a new suit.
Happy Birthday Matthew!!
We Love You!!

Happy Halloween!

Halloween for us was celebrated the Friday before. Since it was on Sunday that's of course when they trick-or-treat where we live. I didn't love the idea of my kids going out on Sunday so we ended up just going over to our church for the trunk-or-treat.
Bethany and Timmy posing in their costumes.
Sam was Boots the Monkey.
Bethany was Tinker Bell. She was NOT happy that I make her wear a shirt underneath her costume but I was eventually able to get a pretty good smile out of her.
Timmy was Wolverine and thrilled to have so many muscles.
Matthew was a Ghoul but then decided he was something out of Harry Potter so he had to have a staff.
Scott was a Twin Girl with his friend Kamren. One of the boys at the trunk-or-treat messed up Scott's hair and Andy took the picture before I was able to fix it but I'm sure you can imagine how cute he looked with his hair all done up! Boys! They crack me up!
Happy Halloween!
